Fil-Am Mutya ng Pilipinas winner vies for intercontinental tilte
JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – A Filipino-American who represented the East Coast Fil-Ams was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas Miss Asia-Pacific 2010 last month at the Sheridan Beach Resort in Puerto Princesa, Philippines.
“Mutya ng Pilipinas was one of the most benefiting and the most gratifying experiences in my life. I’ve learned so much, not only about myself, but about my heritage and my culture,” said Ashley McGarry.
The Miss Asia Pacific portion of the Mutya ng Pilipinas competition was scrapped in 2006, but pageant organizers kept the title leaving the winner with nowhere to compete internationally.
But as luck would have it, Jersey City resident McGarry replaced Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental candidate, Carla Lizardo, who backed out when her family lost their home to a fire.
“I’m very, very sorry about what happened. I did e-mail her. Totally, I was sorry about what happened in the Philippines hoping that she was OK I was taking her place,” said McGarry.
McGarry’s manager said Mutya organizers chose her to represent the Philippines at the 39th Miss Intercontinental Pageant at Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on November 6.
”Although we did not wish for it, we did not ask for it, but I think this is her title, this is her year,” her manager, Danny Pagsambugan said.
The last time any Miss Philippines candidate won any place at the Miss Intercontinental was in 1993, when Maria Sovietskaya Bacud was named 1st runner up.
Pagsambugan believes this year could be a good one for McGarry.
“What she has to do is embrace the moment, enjoy her time. She already has that kind of experience. Her biggest advantage is being spontaneous and in terms of walk, she has to do a little more. But beauty and face and structure of the body, she’s there,” he said.
McGarry is leaving for the Dominican Republic on October 25 and the Miss Intercontinental Pageant coronation night will be held on November 6.
